Advantages, preparation, installation, finishes… find out everything you need to know about tiling skirting boards.

The advantages of tile skirting boards

Installing plinths is essential for a perfect finish. There are wooden plinths like PVC plinths or tiled plinths. However, if you are renovating your kitchen or bathroom, it is strongly advised to choose tiled plinths. And for good reason, this type of material does not fear dust or grease stains. It is easy to clean with a detergent and is resistant to numerous mops. For an optimal finish, the skirting boards must be coordinated with the wall tiles or the floor tiles. The majority of traders have coordinated baseboards in their stock. However, this statement is not always true. It is therefore essential to find a set of plinths that come as close as possible to your wall tiles or the floor to create harmony in the room. Some people turn to colors that harmonize like black and white. For your information, if your tiling baseboards come from an end of series, check that the stock is large enough.

Preparation: an essential step

After choosing the tiling plinths and buying the right tools (rubber mallet, notched spatula, special glue, glue gun, braces, miter boxes), you have to start laying. After cleaning the environment, prepare the glue following the directions on the packaging. The setting time of the glue depends on the brand. It varies from 10 to 30 minutes. During this time, you can start your cuts. To do this, simply position your baseboards on the wall without gluing them and draw, if necessary, reference marks. The plinths are easily cut with a miter box.

Installation of tiling plinths and finishes

The installation is less complicated than it seems. The cuts made and the glue ready, it only remains to install the elements. Take a plinth and place it flat on the floor against the wall. This plinth will follow you throughout your work. It only serves as a wedge to keep the same space for receiving the joints. Glue, then, the back of the plinth of glue with the notched spatula and perform the same manipulation on the wall. Now place your tiling plinth on the wall and tap with the rubber mallet to secure it. Place a crosspiece and repeat the installation with another element. Use the same technique throughout the installation of your baseboards. Tip: if you have a complete set of baseboards, be aware that the majority of traders buy back unused games. Before making the joints, it is essential to allow your baseboards to dry properly. Drying is necessary so that your work adheres well to the wall and does not come off at the slightest opportunity. We recommend using a ready-to-use mortar which greatly facilitates the task. There is also powdered mortar. If you choose this type of product, follow the recommendations on the packaging. The filling is done using a small trowel called "cat's tongue".
